Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT)

What is Medication Assisted Treatment?

Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) combines FDA‑approved medications with counseling and behavioral therapies to help people reduce cravings, stabilize their recovery, and improve long‑term outcomes. Here’s a brief overview of MAT for the three major substance categories:

Opioid MAT (Medications for Opioid Use Disorders - MOUD)

Uses medications that reduce withdrawal symptoms and cravings while supporting safe, stable recovery. Common medications include buprenorphine, methadone, and naltrexone.

Alcohol MAT

Helps reduce cravings, prevent relapse, and support brain and body stabilization. Medications include naltrexone, acamprosate, and disulfiram.

Tobacco/Nicotine MAT

Supports quitting by reducing withdrawal and cravings. Options include nicotine replacement therapies (patch, gum, lozenges), bupropion, and varenicline.
